The Use of CD-ROM in the Classroom

At IVC (Instituto de la Vera-Cruz) the courses of English are supported by Essential American English, a book by Richmond Editorial. This book contains a CD-ROM for the student, which helps during the classes as well as in an autonomous way for students to practice the target language. Some parts of this CD-ROM are developed as grammar exercises, others as games, which bring a ludicrous feeling to the learning experience.

On the other hand, there is the multi-ROM for the teacher. This multi-ROM includes the whole book with interactive traits. The interaction students are exposed to is really involving.

Some contradictions regarding the use of this material include the lack of computing skills that some students, as well as teachers, may suffer from; another is the computing material an institution could provide.

Still, and luckily, at IVC the projection and computing materials are available. It is very important to count as much as possible with the support of the institution one works for in order to take advantage of the multimedia materials included in the book package intended for our teaching practice.

  1. Working with CD-rom is good and useful but we sometimes find out that teachers are not well prepared or the school doesn't the appropriate facilities to do so. Theres might be people (teachers, students) who may not like it but with trainig and practie they could be taking advantage from a very good tool for class.

  2. You are right. It is very important to be prepared to handle those materials. Students can help teachers to do that sometimes. I have seen how some teachers ask students for help related to some technological issues. The school is another important factor. If the school does not support you in that regard, then there is no chance for technology to be implemented in the classroom!!!

  3. in my context students do not realize the importance of a CD- Room. I see that some courses that I teach have a CD at the end of the book to practice vocabualry or conversation models and sometimes we finish the course and they do not open the CD. I have to punish them so that they open it and listen to it at least one time.so I agree that training is the key even we do not like to use it.
